Makanan Hari Raya: Kelupis

Makanan Hari Raya:
Kelupis

This is a food drawing done with respect to the festive season of Eid Mubarak (also known as Hari Raya), widely celebrated in Muslim countries. The drawing was fashioned after the highly acclaimed Studio Ghibli, who has produced numerous animated feature films.

After studying how Studio Ghibli stylizes their food drawing, there were three key observations made. First is the use of line art/strokes/outlines. Second is that they simplify their colouring by using flat colours to show the areas of highlights and shadows, ie. The colours do not blend, and have a defined separation. Third observation made is that the highlighted and shadowed areas are rarely drawn with harsh edges.

The colour palette was created based on the colour from the reference photo (using the eye dropper tool) to get accurate colours. However, the object is limited to only three colours: base colour, shadow, and highlight.

Below is the process of the kelupis drawing, starting from sketching, then identifying the areas of highlights and shadows, then applying base colours, and lastly, colouring the highlights and shadows.
There were two more food to be drawn, but the project manager had decided to change the food chosen and hence the remaining two food (ketupat and kuih sapit) were never finished. Since there are no finished drawings of the ketupat and kuih sapit, here are the sketches of the food instead.
